The first days in a new job are usually exciting and uncomfortable at the same time. You look forward to everything new that awaits you, but at the same time you feel insecure among all the unknown faces and tasks. Nevertheless, with a few little tricks, it's not that difficult to make a success of your start in your new job.

It is self-evident that one informs oneself about the most important formalities before starting a new job. Of course you have to know exactly where and when you have to arrive on the first day and who your contact person is. Arriving late is an absolute no-go, so allow plenty of time to get to work and even test the route to the office in advance if possible.

Besides, one should be informed about the dress code. As a rule, you already got to know the company during the job interview and were able to get an idea of what it was like. The industry also already reveals a lot about the dress code. While it's very formal in a bank, employees in start-ups are often dressed more casually. As a general rule, it is better to be overdressed than underdressed. However, it was unpleasant to appear more formally dressed than the management on the first day of work.

It may also be possible to obtain information and material on the new activity in advance. You should definitely use this to get a rough overview on the first day.

Finding the right mab

In a new job, of course, everything is new at first. That's why it's important to listen, observe and learn from others right from the start. You first have to get to know the social structures and your area of responsibility very well. As a new team member, it is usually inappropriate to try to make major changes right away. If you notice negative things, you can keep them in mind, of course, but you should wait for a certain amount of time before you update them.

Nevertheless, in some areas you should also be proactive. If you are missing work equipment or important tasks, you should not wait for other people to notice, but ask them directly. In the same way, don't be afraid to ask questions when things are unclear. As a rule, it is never a disadvantage to approach colleagues and actively show interest.

Showing the will to perform

Especially at the beginning, it is important to do the tasks assigned to you to the best of your ability and to always show commitment. If you are finished faster than expected, you should not turn your back, but proactively ask for new tasks. Despite all the euphoria, however, the pace of work in the first few weeks should be one that can be sustained over the long term. If you're always at the company the longest in the early days and get a lot done, you're not going to make a good impression if you stop after just a few weeks. It is important to find the balance.

To make yourself popular

First of all: nobody likes suck-ups. Nevertheless, it is of course helpful to make friends. It may sound simple, but if you bring donuts for everyone at the end of your first week and thank them for the warm welcome you received from your colleagues, you will earn yourself a little bonus point.

Perhaps the most important advice comes at the end: maintain authenticity! Despite all efforts to please everyone, to make a good impression and to gain an overview of everything as quickly as possible, one must always remain true to oneself. It is useless to pretend permanently in order to be successful, because it is difficult to maintain such a facade in the long run and in this way you will not become happy yourself.
